el paso children’s hospital only has a few hours to respond to yet another offer by university medical center. meanwhile… new developments with what could happen if children’s declines. the pope is getting ready to address the united nations this morning … as he continues his history-making tour of the u-s. and at least four college students are dead, this morning, after a so- called “duck bus” crashed with charter bus in seattle. a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. good morning! today we’re seeing temps in the 60s in lower elevations. high elevations are in the 50s. the temps will rise today back to 80s in lower elevations, some of us even in the low 90s again! that’s warm for this time of year! as for today, we’ll become breezy and we’ve still got a very low chance of rain in some areas. so we’ll track that low chance coming up! we’ll talk more about what to expect for the rest of this work week and the weekend ahead coming up in your full forecast. new developments overnight in the race to save el paso children’s hospital. university medical center files an emergency request to the bankruptcy court for permission to introduce its plan to reorganize the bankrupt hospital. meanwhile… children’s hospital has until 10 o’clock this morning to accept terms set by u-m-c … or fend for itself. we don’t know the terms of umc’s last offer to children’s because the negotiations are confidential. we do know that if children’s were to accept this offer from umc – it would pause its lawsuit against umc – and look for a finacial partner. as we just metioned– overnight umc made filed an emergency motion to be allowed to present its own plan in bankruptcy court. the request argues that chi details why good morning el paso’s denise olivas has the story developing now… denise? in that emergency request– umc attorneys reminded judge h. christopher mott in a motion yesterday that children’s is running out of money and time. the request says– quote: the debtor will have accomplished nothing but more delay, a substantial increase in professional fees, and pushing the children’s hospital that much closer to the brink of total failure and closure,” umc added that the two plans presented by children’s are incompatible options for reorganization… umc calling the first plan a “hail mary” attem by children’s to find another partner. if it finds another partner all litigation between the two hositals would be dropped. the second plan– umc would involuntarily contribute additional money to children’s debtors. if the judge grants umc’s latestemergency request to terminate children’s exclusivity period, the hospital could present its argument on tuesday during a hearing in austin. in the meantime– the clock is ticking for children’s. it has until 10 o’clock this morning to accept terms set by u-m-c. the pope has been declared a new yorker. after stepping into the famed st. patrick’s cathedral — the catholic clergy say pope francis is one of them. before flying to new york — the pope spoke with congress and handed out lunch to the poor in washington d-c. chris welch reports on more of the pope’s historic trip. all smiles as pope francis greeted a new york crowd. he rode in his pope mobile flanked on all sides by heavy security. but francis took his time — waving — smiling — and accepting gifts. he arrived in new york from a busy stretch in d-c. rousing applause for the first pope to address a joint- meeting of congress. in his speech, he urged lawmakers to work together and help the powerless. namely, undocumented immigrants and the poor. ” i am convinced that we ca make a difference. i’m sure. ” the pope saw first-hand som of the poor and homeless he spoke about. at nearby saint patrick’s church, he blessed a lunch served to catholic charity clients, and said a prayer for the poor. the pope finished his night at st. patrick’s cathedral — offering prayers to the faithful. : “i would like to express my esteem and gratitude to the religious women of the united states. what would the church be without you?” reporting in new york, i’m chris welch. we spoke with congressman beto o’rourke who was among those in attendance for the pope’s address in washington. here is what he had to say. “perhaps it is that encouragement that we need to take the next steps to get some of these things done and the timing couldn’t be more perfect, we are less than a week away from a potential government shutdown from an inability of republicans democrats to compromise and perhaps it takes somebody from the outside to remind us that that’s what we need to do if we are going to continue to keep this country great and make it even greater.” congressman o’rourke grew up catholic and although he isn’t as devout as his mother would like – he says he was fortunate to share this special moment with his mother. the congressman says the pope’s message left him with a renewed faith to do difficult but neccesary things. an el paso teen was also among those who witnessed the pope’s speech in washington. 19-year-old cassandra pena.is going to school at american university. cassandra is with her mom, aunt and congressman will hurd who provided the tickets to the speech. we spoke to cassandra over the phone about the impact the pope’s message had on her: “from now on i think i’m goin to live my life differently….in every action i do i guess. ” it will be another busy day for pope francis today in just a short while… at 6:30 a-m, he’ll speak to the united nations general-assembly. then at 9:30, he’ll hold a multi- religious service at the 9/11 memorial and museum at the world trade center. then at two in the afternoon… the morning… .accused of stabbing a teenager at a fast food restaurant. 36-year-old jimmy barela allegedly got into a fight over a parking space — with a 17-year-old boy and two of his friends. police say barela punched the boy and then cut the boy’s hand with a pocket knife. barela drove off but was arrested later. the victim’s injuries were not serious. developing now… saudi arabia is trying to figure out what went wrong with a deadly stampede yesterday two giant waves of muslim pilgrims collided at an intersection near a holy site. more than 700 people were crushed and trampled to death in the worst disaster at the hajj in a quarter-century. saudi arabia has invested billions in infrastructure to prevent this from happening since the last stampede. what we do know is that it happened in a narrow road… with one group coming one way… and another group coming the other way. saudi officials aren’t sure how that happened. the hajj has drawn over 2 million people from over 180 countries this year. and in seattle… four people were killed and 11 injured following a crash between a tour bus and a tour vehicle. the bus was carrying an international group of students. the national
