City Rep: “City Must Fight Back Against ‘Sicario’ Portrayal”

previe for the movie sicario. it’s supposed to take place on the juarez – el paso border and it’s getting a lot of oscar buzz. the story revolves around an idealistic fbi agent played by emily blunt. but there’s also a lot of people speaking out against the movie – including el paso politicians. welcome back to abc-seven at six, i’m estela cas. and i’m rick cabrera. let’s go to our reporter maria garcia with perspective …you’ll see only on abc-7.. it’s a constant struggle: how to convince the country and the world that the lawless border they see on movies like sicario is not an accurate image of the border. one city rep says it’s time to confront the problem head on: go watch the movie and brainstorm how to fight back. 23-28 “welcome to juarez” 00:27 rath than sitting on the sidelines and saying ‘gosh here’s another movie that’s showing our region in a negative light. i thought that we could do something a little more proactive and constructive the juarez mayor is asking residents to boycott the movie saying it perpetuates violent stereotypes of juarez. but in el paso city rep peter svarzbein inviting residents to watch the movie with him. 03:06 i think it’s important that we stand up for ourselves svarzbein is encouraging residents to join a panel discussion on the movie on sunday at the westside regional command center. “you gotta be careful aroun these people.” 04:48 it’s not a question of this didn’t happen and white washing history but to go and say that this is the only kind of story that can be told about the border – one dealing with drug running one dealing with violence one dealing with murder is an inaccuracy 05:06 why can’t there be a romantic comedy that’s set on the border? right? why can’t that happen? but isn’t it the country the city has to convince the border is not that violent? is a discussion among el pasoans preaching to the choir? 03:44 it starts with people talking. it starts with people thinking about it and then action can come from that the discussion will take place sunday at the westside regional command at 7pm. on the panel will be congressman beto o’rourke, state rep joe moody and utep professor dr. richard pineda. there’s a screening of the movie at 4:25 if you want to watch the movie will be congressman beto o’rourke, state rep joe moody and utep professor dr. richard pineda. there’s a screening of the movie at 4:25 if you want to watch the movie on the westside cinemark before the discussion. and maria you’ll be exploring this further on abc-7 xtra on sunday night. thank you. jumtrack
