Police identify teenagers killed in deadly crash
Police say a teenager driving a 2014 Chevrolet Spark failed to yield the right of way to the driver of a 2016 Ford Focus at the intersection of Diana and Guadalupe, colliding with the Focus.
Monday, police identified the 15-year-old girl as Natalie Torres. Police say Torres was driving the Spark.
Her 16-year-old passenger, Max Perez, also died at the scene, according to police.
The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, June 23.
Sasha Sloan and her husband live nearby and were the first to arrive after the crash.
“She was unconscious at the scene. We were able to pull her out. Her seat belt came off quickly. We were able to pull her out,” Sloan said.
They desperately tried to save the young couple, but it was too late. The horrific crash would take three lives. Torres was six months pregnant with a girl she had named Anastasia.
Both teens attended Irvin High School. Josue Aldaba was a classmate who knew Perez.
“He was just really a cool guy and it’s just sad to such a young guy man. And he was ready. Ready to start a family with his girlfriend. And I knew he would have been a great father. A great father he would have been,” Perez said.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help the family of Natalie Torres pay for funeral expenses.
The driver of the Focus, 22-year old Mario Lopez, is not being charged in connection with the crash. Police at the scene of the crash arrested Lopez on unrelated charges. They also charged Lopez with resisting arrest Thursday night.
Jail records show that in 2013, Lopez was charged for being a minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage and for being a minor who consumed an alcoholic beverage.
In 2015, Lopez was charged for allegedly driving 81 miles per our in a 60 mph zone and for driving with a “wrong plate or seal.”
