Fabens teen dies trying to save friend
Friends and family are remembering a Fabens teen who died over the weekend as a hero. It was the young man’s last act that saved another — but cost him his own life.
Friends of Edson Alvarado describe him in a lot of different ways, but there is one common denominator: selflessness.
Last Friday, the 15-year-old was hanging out with three friends near a Fabens irrigation canal. At one point, a 12-year-old boy was crossing a levee and suddenly lost his balance, falling into the canal.
Witnesses say Alvarado tried to help his friend but also fell into the water. Despite their desperate efforts, the other teens could only pull one to safety. Alvarado’s body was found the next day.
Audrey Solis was a high school friend.
“It’s pretty hard for all of us because we lost a kind and caring person,” Solis said.
Friends came together to grieve their loss and hold a car wash.
High school friend Nathan Solis said the group wanted to raise money to help cover the cost of Alvarado’s funeral.
“We feel this is a way to give back to him for the great person he was and we will never forget him,” Solis said.
Alvarado is being described on a GoFundMe page and that is how his Class of 2019 friends will likely always remember him.
“He was admired by a lot of people and I felt that this was something we had to do. And it came from my heart because I know he would have done the same thing,” Solis said.
