Burges to host UTEP basketball alumni game and camp
EL PASO, Texas – Former UTEP Basketball greats Jason Williams and Omar Thomas will host the 2nd Annual Basketball Camp and UTEP Alumni Game on July 23 at Burges High School, 7800 Edgemere Blvd, El Paso, TX 79925.
The clinic will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. and the game will begin at 5 p.m.
Participants of the UTEP Alumni Game include Jason Williams (UTEP, 2003-2006); Omar Thomas (UTEP, 2003-2005); Leonard Owens (UTEP, 2000-2002); Miguel Ayala (UTEP, 2004-2006); Brandon Wolform (UTEP, 1997-2000); Victor Luces (UTEP, 1998-2002); CJ Cooper (UTEP, 2011-2015); Randy Culpepper (UTEP 2007-2011); John Bohanan (UTEP, 2010-2014), Earvin Morris (UTEP, 2014-2016) ;Tyler Tafoya (UTEP, 2009-2014, (Toraino Johnson, Chapin High School/Utah State).
Additionally, Former NBA player Lee Nailon will be in attendance, speaking to the children about skills needed to be successful.
“We hope to influence the children of El Paso gain the confidence needed to make positive decisions in their lives while helping them improve their basketball skills, but letting them know that school is very important, and keeping positive people around them,” said Williams. “Moreover it’s about us giving back to the community who came out every home game and showed us love and welcomed many of us who still live here with arms. We are asking everyone to come out to enjoy our event also to bring any pair of shoes that’s wearable for kids or teens we will take these shoes and donate to kids around the city that’s in need of shoes. We are proud to work with other UTEP alumni and local sponsors to make this happen.”
Raffle tickets will be available, with proceeds going towards camp expenses and future nonprofit activities. The cost to participate in the camp is $50 and to watch the game is free admission. Participants are encouraged to bring new or gently used shoes which will be donated to the less fortunate in the El Paso community.
