Police: Felon discarded gun as he ran away from officers

The man who allegedly refused to stop his vehicle after police attempted to pull him over has been charged with “Evading Arrest” and “Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.”

Officers arrested 44-year-old Juan Manuel Estrada Monday afternoon in the 400 block of Lafayette. Estrada was driving a Nissan Altima when he allegedly failed to “signal intent.”

When police tried to pull him over, Estrada allegedly refused to stop, collided with a black Dodge Magnum, exited the vehicle, and discarded a handgun as he ran away from police.

Officers arrested Estrada after a brief foot pursuit in the 400 block of Bates Way. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on bonds totaling $105,000.

Jail records show Estrada remains jailed. Gang unit investigators recovered the firearm.
