Dozens of administrator jobs open at El Paso schools

As the school year begins, dozens of El Paso schools are still looking for candidates to fill administrator positions.

The ABC-7 I-Team discovered nearly two dozen administrator openings at the El Paso Independent School District, including 10 principal positions. The district’s website also shows EPISD is looking for 12 assistant principals. 15 are in the interview process.

In the meantime, EPISD Spokeswoman Melissa Martinez tells Abc-7 interim principals including retired professionals are holding down the fort. If possible, the district would like to hire internally.

“As a parent i would not be alarmed if there’s a vacancy at a campus or numerous vacancies at a campus. Again, because there are a variety of reasons as why principals or assistant principals might leave. Some are retiring some take other positions at Central Office that’s very common,” Martinez said.

Thursday, the EPISD held a community meeting for parents, teachers and students at Irvin High School as the district looks for a new principal.

EPISD reassigned the former principal, Laron Sharp as principal earlier this year for personnel reasons. During the meeting, parents said they want someone who has an open door policy and committed to education and keeping students safe while on campus.

“I have a 9th-grader here so, I’m a little worried about him. So, I am one of the parents that you are going to see a lot here,” one parent said.

The Ysleta ISD meanwhile, is also looking for three assistant principals and three principals, though the district’s database doesn’t list locations for those vacancies.

There are at least six administrator job opening jobs at the Socorro school district, with one principal opening at Mission Ridge Elementary School.

In the meantime, Martinez says EPISD will hold parent profile meetings to get a feel for what they want in a future principal.

“I wouldn’t want to commit to a timeline because every campus is different,” adding it depends on the number of applicants. Martinez says there have been some instances where the district hires immediately, other times, interims have had to fill in for as long as the entire school year.
