Wiener dogs whisk away for a win

Greyhounds are known for their incredible speed, but this morning it was wiener dogs who raced downtown. The annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener National brought dozens of dogs together to see who was the fastest in the borderland.

More than 60 dogs, dachshunds and weiner mixes, from Dorkies to Chiweenies ran across Cleveland Square park Saturday morning in the qualifying rounds for the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals

“I mean it’s a family affair, you can bring your kids, you can bring the whole family in. You’ve got wiener dogs that are super adorable,” said trevor trout, the race host.

From tiny two-month-old puppies running around the park, to a 60-pound contender, everyone was having fun. One of the eight finalists, Hai Ya, is a chihuahua weiner mix. Her owner jangling car keys to get her to run, a sound Hai Ya connects with going out, the keys and her hobbies helping her land a spot in the finals.

Although not everyone was able to make it, it doesn’t mean they’ll stop trying.

“Next year she’ll make it to the finals for sure,” said one dog owner who narrowly missed placing.

The finals will be Saturday at 7:05 pm during the Chihuahua’s game. The prize is $500.
