CBP: 2 dead after minivan crashes in Border Patrol Pursuit

Customs and Border Protection said nine individuals were apprehended after they fled from Border Patrol agents in a suspected smuggling attempt.

The chase happened Saturday night on Highway 9 between mile markers 131 and 142 in New Mexico.

CBP says Border Patrol Agents put out a spike strip to attempt to deflate the van’s tires, but the vehicle swerved to avoid the spikes. CBP says the driver of the van lost control, cauising it rolled several times.

CBP says two individuals riding in the miniman were thrown from the vehicle and died due to injuries sustained.

CBP says the driver is a 27-year-old man and a U.S. citizen.

The driver has been arrested.
