El Paso man dies in southeastern New Mexico crash

An El Paso man died Friday morning in a crash in Eddy County, which is in southeastern New Mexico, according to state police.

Police say 28-year-old Matthew Thomas Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene close to 10:30 a.m.

According to the department, Daniel was traveling east on State Road 128, just east of Loving. For an unknown reason, the man’s vehicle crossed into the opposite lanes and crashed into the rear trailer axels of an International tractor trailer.

The state’s Office of the Medical Investigator pronounced Daniel dead at the scene, according to police. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The state continues to investigate the cause of the incident.

Editor’s note: This story originally said the man who died was Matthew Daniel Thomas. A family member and family friend wrote to ABC-7, correcting the man’s name to Matthew Thomas Daniel. After being contacted by KVIA, a spokesman for New Mexico state police made a correction to their original information.
