Man ejected from motorcycle killed as he attempted to get off freeway lanes, police say

El Paso Police say speeding and alcohol are believed to be factors in the wreck that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist Friday morning.

Police identified the motorcyclist killed as 26-year-old Abram Vega.

The crash happened on I-10 East just past the Piedras exit at 12:50 a.m. on April 19, 2019.

Police said an investigation revealed Vega was riding a 2007 Honda motorcycle east on I-10 when he crashed into the center median.

Vega’s motorcycle skidded more than half a mile, eventually coming to a rest on the Raynolds off-ramp.

Police said Vega was attempting to get out of the left traffic lane after he was thrown off the motorcycle when he was struck and killed by the driver of a 2007 Nissan Altima also travelling east on I-10.

“Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash,” said El Paso Police. No charges have been filed against the driver of the Altima.

The portion of I-10 East where Vega was killed was closed for eight hours “due to the large extended area of the crash scene,” police said.

This is the 23rd traffic fatality of the year compared to 13 at this time last year.
