CHAPARRAL, New Mexico -- An Otero County Prison inmate was among five more coronavirus deaths reported Wednesday in New Mexico, while 38 new cases at Otero County detention facilities helped pushed the state's case count over the 10,000 mark.

The deceased federal inmate, a man in his 50s who had been hospitalized, was the third inmate at the prison to die of the virus - which accounts for the majority of Otero County's now five fatalities from the pandemic. The state's official death count reached 452.

In addition to the death, the Otero County Prison recorded eight additional infections among inmates to raise the prison's total to 581. The neighboring Otero County ICE Processing Center posted 30 new cases to bring its tally to 138.

Between the two adjacent detention centers, there have now been 719 cases. Meanwhile, there was just one new case reported among Otero County residents for a total of 30 to date.

Elsewhere in southern New Mexico, there were 18 new cases occurring in Doña Ana County, which now stands at 676 infections and six deaths.

Across all of New Mexico on Wednesday, cases rose by 138 to reach a cumulative count of 10,065. Nearly 28% of the state's additional caseload for the day was a result of the two Otero detention facilities, while southern New Mexico as a whole accounted for over 40% of those cases.

Below you can see county-by-county data for virus cases and deaths across New Mexico. The data comes from Johns Hopkins University, so the numbers may sometimes vary a bit from what's reported by the state health department.
