EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The Department of Public Health reported four additional Covid-19 deaths and an increase of 108 cases Thursday morning in El Paso County.

Three women, two in their 50s and one in her 60s died. The lone male victim was in his 70s. The Department of Public Health said they all had underlying health conditions.

The death toll now stands at 72.

“Every death is not just a number. Each of these individuals are someone’s loved one and we grieve with them for their loss,” El Paso's Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza said. “We are also reporting another large spike in positive cases; and until the community understands the seriousness of this virus and holds themselves accountable we are likely to continue seeing more deaths and more spikes.”

There have been a total of 2,569 coronavirus cases in El Paso County, of those, 1,032 are active.

The Department of Public Health said that 1,465 El Pasoans have now recovered, an increase of 80 from the day before. However, once again, the number of daily new cases was greater than the number of the day's recoveries.

Hospitalizations increased by eight to 118; 67 of those patients are in intensive care and 28 are on ventilators. The hospitalization rate is closely monitored by officials - and increases can be cause for concern as it represents the severest cases of the virus.
