The University Interscholastic League first held a state championship in volleyball during the 1966-1967 season.One El Paso area public high school has won two championships and finished runner up twice. That school is Anthony High School. Anthony won 2 titles in 1975. Confused? So was I until I read that the UIL held its volleyball championships in the spring prior to the 1975 season. Anthony defeated Overton Leverette's Chapel 15-5 and 15-7 to win the Class B title in the spring of the 1974-1975 school year. The UIL decided to hold its volleyball championship in the fall beginning in the 1975-1976 school year. Anthony once again was the Class B champion this time defeating Bronte 6-15, 15-3, and 20-18. Anthony was runner up to Orchard in both the springs of 1973 and 1974. Coronado High School, Fort Hancock High School, and Fabens High School have all finished runner up in their respective classifications. Fabens High School has finished second in the state twice and have also finished in the Final 4 while Fort Hancock has an Elite 8 performance in its history. Eastwood High School and Fort Hancock High School have finished in the Sweet Sixteen two times while Riverside High School, Hanks High School, and Montwood High School have all made this stage once. Several schools have made it to the Regional Quarter Finals which is the same as the final 32 teams. Franklin High School has made it to this stage twice while Eastwood High School, Burges High School, Chapin High School, and Coronado High School have reached the Final 32 one time apiece.

My main resource for volleyball research has been the UIL website, uiltexas.org. Their records are far from complete. Only state champions and runner ups can be found from 1967 until 1983. Some of the records since 1983 only list Final 4 participants and some of the records have been repeated for multiple years. With that being said, here is what my research shows:

2017 Volleyball

Anthony High School is the only area team that has ever won a state championship in volleyball and that remained the case in 2017. Several area teams had outstanding seasons in 2017 but came up short in the state playoffs.

6A Volleyball

Franklin, Coronado, Eastwood, and Eldorado represented the El Paso area in 6A state playoffs. Coronado, El Dorado, and Eastwood all won their bi-district matches. Coronado defeated San Angelo Central 3-0; El Dorado beat Midland Lee 3-0; and Eastwood topped Midland 3-2. Franklin was defeated by Tascosa 3-2 in their playoff encounter. Coronado was the only team to advance past the Area round when the T Birds defeated Mansfield 3-1. Keller beat El Dorado 3-0 and Weatherford topped Eastwood 3-0. Coronado's season ended in the Regional Quarter Finals when they were beaten by Weatherford 3-0.

5A Volleyball

Burges, Chapin, Horizon, and El Paso High all won their Bi District matches. The Mustangs beat Eastlake 3-0; the Huskies defeated Canutillo 3-0; Horizon outlasted Jefferson 3-1; and EPHS got by Ysleta 3-0. Unfortunately, all El Paso area teams were defeated in the Area round. Canyon defeated EPHS 3-0; Amarillo beat Horizon 3-1; Hereford topped Burges 3-2; and Randall defeated Chapin 3-0.

4A Volleyball

The 4A teams didn't fare any better in their bi district matches. Andrew defeated San Elizario 3-0; Fabens beat Monahans 3-2; Mountain View lost to Greenwood 3-0; and Pecos beat Clint 3-0. The Area stage saw Pecos fall to Bushland 3-1 and Fabens lose to Levelland 3-2.

3A Volleyball

Tornillo lost to Grape Creek 3-0 in their bi-district match.

2A Volleyball

Anthony defeated McCamey 3-0 in their bi-district match but lost to Post 3-0 in the Area round.

El Paso area volleyball teams play solid volleyball during the season but something seems to go wrong every year in the playoffs. Very few teams advance more than two rounds. Such was the case again this year as Coronado was the only El Paso representative to make it to the third round of the playoffs.

2016 Volleyball Update

Anthony High School will remain the El Paso area's on team to ever win a state championship in the sport of volleyball. Several local teams had outstanding seasons in 2016 with Coronado High School having the best. The Thunderbirds finished with a 33-6 record and made it to the Regional Semi-Finals before being eliminated by Southlake Carroll. T-Bird coach, Raul Lawrence, was named the area's Coach of the Year and Coronado's Campbell Bowden was named El Paso's Player of the Year. Other teams that had outstanding seasons were Franklin High School 38-7, El Dorado 25-9, Chapin 25-18, Riverside 26-11, Eastlake 30-8, and El Paso High 28-10. Here is a recap of how the El Paso area teams fared in the state playoffs:

6A Volleyball

The top 4 finishers in District 1-6A were Coronado, Franklin, El Dorado, and Montwood. Franklin and Montwood were defeated in the Bi-District Round. Franklin was beaten by Midland 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 12-25, and 15-6). Montwood fell to San Angelo 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, and 25-17). El Dorado advanced to the Area Playoffs by defeating Tascosa 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, and 25-21). Coronado started their playoff run by winning their Bi-District match against Permian 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, and 25-18).

El Dorado saw their season come to an end in the Area Round of the playoffs when the Aztecs were defeated by Keller 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 21-25, and 25-11). Coronado won its' Area Round match by defeating Keller Central 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-7).
Coronado defeated Arlington Lamar in its' Regional Quarter-Finals match 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, and 25-20) to set up a Regional Semi-Finals matchup with Southlake Carroll. The Thunderbirds excellent season came to an end with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, and 25-20) defeat to the Dragons.

5A Volleyball

El Paso High School, Chapin High School, Burges High School, and Jefferson High School were the top 4 finishers in District 1-5A. Eastlake High School, Riverside High School, Horizon High School, and Hanks High School were the Bi-District representatives from District 2-5A.Bi-District action saw El Paso High defeated Hanks 3-0, Chapin defeated Horizon 3-0, Burges ousted Riverside 3-0, and Eastlake beat Jefferson 3-2.
The Area stage of the playoffs was not kind to the El Paso area's 5A schools. Chapin was defeated by Cooper 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, and 27-25). Burges was beaten by Amarillo 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, and 25-20). Eastlake was defeated by Randall 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, and 25-15). El Paso High was beaten by Hereford 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 19-25, and 15-10).

4A Volleyball

El Paso's 4a representatives in the annual state volleyball championships were Fabens, Mountain View, San Elizario, and Clint. Unfortunately, all four were defeated in the Bi-District round. Fabens lost to Monahans 3-0, Andrews defeated Mountain View 3-1, San Elizario was beaten by Fort Stockton 3-0, and Clint lost to Pecos 3-0.

3A and 2A Volleyball

Tornillo and Anthony were the area's representatives in 3A and 2A state competition, respectively. Tornillo was defeated by Grape Creek 3-0 and Anthony was beaten by Mc Camey 3-1.
A Final 4 finish still eludes the El Paso area high schools. Maybe 2017 will bring an end to that drought. Until then, Anthony High School will remain the area's only state champion in volleyball.

2015 Volleyball Update

Anthony High School will remain the only El Paso area high school to ever have won a Texas state championship in the sport of volleyball. Coronado High School and Chapin High School were the only teams that advanced past the Bi-District stage of the playoffs. The Thunderbirds and the Huskies both reached Regional Quarter-Finals before being eliminated. The following is a summary of the district representatives in the playoffs for the 4A, 5A, and 6A classifications.

4A Classification

Mountain View, Fabens, San Elizario, and Clint were the El Paso area's playoff representatives in volleyball. Unfortunately, each school was eliminated at the Bi-District stage. Moutain View was defeated by Monahans 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, and 25-16). Fabens was beaten by Fort Stockton 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-23, and 25-22). San Elizario lost to Seminole 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, and 15-6). Clint was defeated by Andrews 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, and 25-21).

5A Classification

Chapin, Burges, Canutillo, and El Paso High were the top teams in 1-5A while Horizon, Bel Air, Eastlake, and Hanks represented 2-5A in the state playoffs. Bi-District action saw Chapin beat Horizon 3-2 (23-25, 25-15, 25-11, 23-25, and 15-12); Burges defeated Bel Air 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, and 25-17); Eastlake defeated Canutillo 3-0 (28-26, 25-22, 25-16); and El Paso High beat Hanks 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, and 25-16).

Area Round competition saw Chapin defeat Canyon 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, and 25-18); Burges lost to Randall 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, and 25-19); Eastlake was defeated by Dumas 3-1 (30-28, 25-15, 20-25, 25-20); and El Paso High lost to Hereford 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, and 25-18).

Chapin's playoff run would end in the Regional Quarter-Finals against Randall. Randall defeated the Huskies in three straight sets (25-18,25-22, and 25-22).

6A Classification

Franklin, El Dorado, Eastwood, and Coronado were the 1-6A representatives for the Sun City is the 2015 state volleyball playoffs. Eastwood and El Dorado were eliminated in Bi-District competition. Franklin would win its Bi-District match but lose in the Area stage. Coronado would win its Bi-District and Area round matches before falling in the Regional Quarter-Finals.

Bi-District action saw Franklin beat Lubbock Coronado 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-20); El Dorado was defeated by Tascosa 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-10, and 25-22); Eastwood was beaten by Amarillo 3-0 (25-17, 25-6, and 25-17); and Coronado defeated Frenship 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, and 26-24).

Area round competition would see Franklin playing Arlington Lamar and Coronado taking on San Angelo Central. The Cougars were eliminated in three straight sets (25-18, 25-13, and 25-18). The Thunderbirds would make it to the Regional Quarter-Finals by defeating Central 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-20).

Coronado's playoff run would end in the Regional Quarter-Finals when they were defeated by Amarillo 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, and 25-12).

2014 Update

The elusive trip to the final four still remained out of reach for all the El Paso area high schools in 2014. The 6A playoffs saw Coronado High School defeat Amarillo Tascosa and Abilene High School before losing to Amarillo High School in the Regional Quarter Finals. Franklin High School defeated Frenship in their Bi-District match before losing to North Crowley in the Area round. El Dorado and Eastwood were defeated in Bi-District matches respectively by Lubbock Coronado and Amarillo High School. El Paso High School was the only 5A high school to advance pass the Bi-District stage. The Tigers defeated Del Valle High School and Hereford before losing to Dumas in the Regional Quarter Finals. Other Bi-District winners were Chapin over Riverside, Canutillo over Horizon, and Eastlake over Jefferson. Area round action saw Chapin lose to Canyon, Canutillo lose to Randall, and Eastlake lose to Dumas. San Elizario, Fabens, Clint, and Mountain View all were defeated in their 4A Bi-District matches. Fort Hancock advanced to the 2A Regional Quarter Finals defeating Marfa and Fort Elliot before losing to Fort Davis. Anthony High School lost its 2A Bi-District match to Wink.

Anthony High School is the Area's only Volleyball Champion

The only high school is the El Paso area to win a state championship in volleyball is Anthony High School. I told the story in the intro to this chapter so I will only repeat the years and scores here:

1972-1973 Anthony lost to Orchard 15-6; 15-1 Class B

1973-1974 Anthony lost to Orchard 15-11; 15-13 Class B

1974-1975 Anthony defeated Overton Leverette's Chapel 15-5; 15-7 Class B

1975-1976 Anthony defeated Bronte 6-15; 15-3; 20-18 Class B

Teams That Finished Runner Up

1978-1979 Coronado High School: The Thunderbirds are the only El Paso public high school team to have played for the State Championship. Their quest came up short when they were defeated by San Antonio Churchill in a 5A best of three match by scores of 13-15; 15-8; and 15-3.

1977-1978 Fabens High School: The Lady Wildcats lost a 3A State Championship match to Needville High School in two straight sets by scores of 16-14 and 15-5.

1984-1985 Fabens High School: The Wildcats finished second in the state when they were defeated by Belville High School in a 3A best of three match by scores of 15-3; 14-16; and 15-13.

1995-1996 Fort Hancock High School: The Lady Mustangs had a memorable playoff run in the 1995-'96 season making it all the way to 1A State Championship game. Fort Hancock's playoff march started with Bi-District victory over Marfa High School by scores of 10-15; 15-4; and 15-7. Grandfalls Royalty would fall in an Area matchup by scores of 15-13 and 15-12. The Mustangs then defeated Fort Davis 19-17 and 15-12 in the Regional Quarter Finals. Next up was a Regional Semi-Final victory over Briscoe Fort Eliot by scores of 15-0 and 15-4. Fort Hancock would defeat 1A volleyball power, Windthorst, 15-3and 15-0 in the State Semi-Finals. The Mustang's magical season would come to an end with a defeat in the State Championship match to Round Top Carmine by scores of 15-4 and 15-8.

Fabens Finishes in the Final 4

1990-1991 Fabens High School: The Lady Wildcats made it to the 3A State Final 4 in the 1990-'91 seasons. The playoff run began with a Bi-District victory over Kermit High School 15-3; and 15-9. Next up was an Area win over Lake Travis 16-14 and 15-12. Victories over Brownfield 15-6; 15-12 in the Regional Semi-Finals and Dripping Springs 15-9; 15-12 in the Regional Finals followed. Fabens dreams of a state title ended when they were defeated by Springtown High School 14-16; 15-4; and 15-10 in the State Championship match.

Fort Hancock Makes the Elite 8

1992-1993 Fort Hancock High School: The Lady Mustangs would have another dream season in the 1992-'93 season as they made it all the way to the Final 8 in the 1A State Volleyball Championships. Fort Hancock defeated Valentine 15-4 and 15-5 in a Bi-District tilt. Next up was a victory over Grandfalls 15-11 and 15-4 in the Area matchup. Miles High School would fall to the Lady Mustangs in the Regional Semi-Finals 15-4 and 15-9. Fort Davis would defeat Fort Hancock 15-10; 11-15; and 15-4 in the Regional Final matchup.

Careful readers may have once again noticed that I said no El Paso public area high school had ever won a volleyball state championship. The story is quite different for the Jesus Chapel girls who compete in the 2A division of TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools). The Jesus Chapel girls have been very successful since the mid 1990's. Jesus Chapel has won three TAPPS State Volleyball Championships; finished runner-up three other times, and finished in the Final 4 once. I have listed the year, opponent, and score for each of Jesus Chapel's title runs when available.

1996-1997 Jesus Chapel defeats Hallettsville Sacred Heart to win the state championship. (Scores not available) Tamra Paselk, Crystal Mehl, Amber Helton were named to the All-State Team.

1998-1999 Jesus Chapel finishes runner-up to Houston Life Christian (Scores not available) Tami Carlton and Madeline Pineda were named to the All-State Team.

1999-2000 Jesus Chapel defeats Baytown Christian to win the state championship (Scores not available) Madeline Pineda, Kristen Rodriguez, and Jennifer Kroeger were named to the All-State Team.

2000-2001 Jesus Chapel defeats AmarilloTrinity Fellowship to win the state championship. (Scores not available) Marjiana Edwards and Belen Oaxaca were named to the All-State Team.

2001-2002 Jesus Chapel finishes runner-up to Waxahachie Cornerstone 13-15, 16-14, 15-5. Won semi-final match against La Marque Abundant Life 16-8, 14-16, 18-16 Lauren Pineda and Belen Oaxaca were named to the All-State Team.

2002-2003 Jesus Chapel finishes in Final 4 loses to Bryan Allen Academy 13-15, 15-1, 15-3. Lauren Pineda, Ginny Green, Victoria Giron, and Valerie Morales were named to the All-State Team.

2006-2007 Jesus Chapel finishes runner-up to Longview Christian. (Scores not available) Danielle Hampton and Lindsey Hall were named to the All-State Team.

2014 El Paso Faith Christian defeats Clear Lake Christian 3-0 to win the TCAL 3A Division I State Championship

The only other school I want to mention is Wink High School. I would not consider Wink an El Paso area high school since they are approximately 200 miles east of El Paso depending on what map you use. Wink plays in the 1A classification and usually runs into Fort Hancock which is the only reason that I mention them. Wink High School has been a 1A dynasty since the UIL began awarding a State Championship in volleyball. Wink was state champions in 1971-1972 and 1973-1974. They have been state runner ups five times 1972-1973, 1976-1977, 1984-1985, 1998-1999, and 2009-2010. Wink has finished in the Final 4 three times 1983-1984, 1985-1986, and 201-2013. The Wildcats have finished in the Elite 8 six times (1999-2000, 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2006-2007, and 2009-2010) and have also finished in the Sweet 16 a total of three times (1991-1992, 2005-2006, and 2007-2008). Congratulations to the Wink Wildcats, a 1A super ream.
