=======================================

El Paso high school teams, both public and private, and individual athletes have always done well in the annual Texas UIL Cross Country meet. The sport doesn't require great physical size. Instead, speed and endurance are an athlete's best assets. I searched the Texas UIL website, uiltexas.org, to see how El Paso and El Paso area teams have competed in the tournament. I found 29 championship performances by either individuals or teams from El Paso area public high schools. I will cover private and parochial schools later in this chapter.

I found 11 instances where El Paso area girls' teams or individual girls have won state championships. The following list shows my findings:

Note: The distance for the girls' cross country course has changed 3 times in its history. The distance was 1 mile in 1975-1976; 1.5 miles in 1976-1977; and 2 miles from 1977-1978 season to the present.

2018 Track and Field

Michael Abeyta, Edwin Gomez, Ian Smith, Brandon Seagraves win gold medals at UIL and TAPPS State Championships

No El Paso area team has ever won a Track and Field state championship. That is still true at the end of the 2018 season. There were no state team championships but there were several individuals who won gold medals at the UIL and TAPPS state meets. There were also several other individuals that bought home silver or bronze medals and others that competed very well at their state meet.

Michael Abeyta of Hanks High School finished in first place in 5A 800 meter run in a time of 1:53.38. Abeyta also brought home a silver medal in the 5A 3200 meter run with a time of 9:15.50 and another silver medal in the 5A 1600 meter run with a time of 4:16.53.

Edwin Gomez of San Elizario had an outstanding meet at the 4A classification. Gomez won two gold medals in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:23.14 and the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:38.79.

A pair of Cathedral runners brought home a total of three gold medals for the Irish at the TAPPS Class 6A State Meet. Brandon Seagraves won gold in 1600 meter run with a time of 4:26.05 and the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:29.0. Ian Smith won the TAPPS 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.85.

There were several other individuals who won silver and bronze medals. Grant Levesque of Coronado finished 3 rd in the 6A Pole Vault with a jump of 16 feet and 6 inches. Coronado's Jaeger-Darakjy finished third in the 6A Girls 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.73. El Paso area athletes won 6 individual gold medals in Track and Field

2018 Cross Country

San Elizario High School is becoming a Texas 4A power in athletics especially in Soccer, Cross Country Track, and Track and Field. The Eagles have won team titles or individual titles in the sports in recent years and have done so again in the 2017-18 school year. San Elizario won the 4A UIL Cross Country title in 2017 and just recently won their second 4A UIL Soccer title. I will write about the Soccer title in my Spring 2018 recap but it is now time to write about the Eagle's Cross Country title.

One state championship is hard enough to win but 2017 marks the 4 th straight state championship for San Elizario. Few athletic teams can match that record (only the Hanks Girls Wrestling team and Cathedral's amazing Swimming team in the El Paso area) and Coach Morales and his team are to be recognized for their accomplishments. You have made the El Paso area proud. Members of the team and their finish in the state cross country meet are listed below:

Edwin Gomez 1 st Place (Individual Gold Medal)

Rene Arambula 4 th place

David Ceballos 9 th place

Seth Rodriguez 13 th place

Martin Pargas 26 th place

Antonio Diaz 28 th place

Adrian Contreras 62 nd place

Cathedral has been a dominant force in TAPPS Cross Country and 2017 was also another good year. Brandon Seagrave won and individual gold medal and led his team mates to a second place finish in Division 6A. Cathedral scored 76 points and finished runner up to San Antonio Antonian and their 67 points. Other Irish team members were Pedro Espinoza 12 th place, Ian Smith 14 th place, and Daniel Maes 17 th place

Loretto Academy finished in 6 th place in the Girl's 6A state meet and were led by Britney Martinez 28 th place and Luciana Borrego's 32 nd place.

Lydia Patterson boys and girls both had respectable showing in TAPPS 5A. The boys finished in 9 th place while the girls placed 14 th .

San Elizario was not the only El Paso area public high school to have a good showing in the various cross country state meets.

6A Boys

The Eastwood boys finished 3 rd in the state. Team members were Gabe Armijo 5 th place, Anthony Molina 11 th place, Elias Perez 20 th place, Juan Olmos 33 rd place, Kayn Quinones 54 th place, Eddie Gallegos 57 th place, and Pedro Guerra 90 th place.

Championship Count: 1 state championship and 3 individual state titles

2017 Track and Field Update

The El Paso area has never produced a UIL high school team that has won a track and field state championship. There have been a couple close calls---Burges and Austin have finished third in the state. Why can't we win a team title? I believe the reason is that our high schools don't do well in the relay races and you can't win a title without excelling in those events since they count double in the scoring. The El Paso area has produced many individuals that have done well at the state tournament (Keandre Bates, a former Burges star, just won 2 NCAA titles competing for the University of Florida) but that team title still eludes the city. That is still the case after the 2017 season.

4A Track and Field
San Elizario's Cross Country team has been the best in Conference 4A for several years and their Track and Field team has also been a force to reckon with. The area's best 4A teams competed in the Area and Regional stages of the UIL 4A Track and Field tournament and here are the best team performances:

2016 Cross Country Update

El Paso area high schools continued to do well in the state cross country championships at both the UIL and TAPPS levels. San Elizario High School won its third straight UIL title and Cathedral High School captured the TAAP's championship. I invite you to read about those state championships in my Fall 2016 Update section.

Cathedral and San Elizario were not the only schools to shine in the state cross country championships. Several other schools and individuals did very well at the state meet.

Tornillo High School worked hard all season to final make the medal stand in Class 3A after finishing 4th in 2015. The teams' hard work was rewarded with a second place finish and a silver medal. Adrian Morales paced Tornillo with an individual 7th place finish and earned All-State honors. Juan Rivera finished 13th; Cesar Gonzalez placed 15th; and Daniel Amaya finished in 18th place.

Eastwood High School brought home a 6th place finish in 6A with Daniel Bernal winning a bronze medal for the Troopers. Austin High School finished in 5th place in the 5A race with Jesus Monreal taking 17th place for the Panthers. Clint High School brought home a 14th place finish with their runner, Walter Slosar finishing in 14th place. Michael Abeyta of Hanks High School earned All-State honors with his 6th place finish in 5A. Other boys that did well at the State meet were Franklin's Adam Cortez, El Dorado's Sebastian Moreno, Irvin's Aaron Gilliam, and Burges High School's Sam Zambrano.

The girls were also well represented. Mountain View's Michelle Estrada earned All-State honors for her 4th place finish in Class 4A. San Elizario's Ashley Parga finished 28th; Canutillo's Anisa Burciaga earned All-State honors with her 9th place finish in the 5A race. It was the second time that Burciaga earned All-State honors. Faben's Jocelyn Castro finished in 108th place. Hanks High School's Andrea Abeyta finished in 35th place in the 5A race.

Socorro High School's Natalie Gomez finished 41st in the 6A race while her team-mate, Jessica Dominguez, came in at 105th place.

El Paso area high school teams have always done well at the annual cross country meet. Expect more of the same in 2017.

2016 Track and Field Update

No El Paso area public high school has ever won a UIL Track and Field State Championship. Unfortunately, that still remains true after the 2016 seasons. Usually El Paso area athletes will win several medals in individual events and there were a couple of bronze medals won and one silver medal. Maybe I got spoiled last year when there were several gold medals won but I expected a better showing from the El Paso area athletes at the state meet. I would have to say that 2016 was a very disappointing year for El Paso area track and field. The following are the top results for every classification:

6A Boys: Eastwood High School was the top area team at the state meet with a 30th placing in the 6A rankings. Americas was next with their 54th place finish. Daniel Bernal of Eastwood won a bronze medal with his 3rd place finish in the 3200 meter run. Brian Lujan of Americas finished in 6th place in the 1600 meter run.

6A Girls: No El Paso area teams in the team rankings and no medals or top ten finishes that I could find.

5A Boys': Burges High School finished in 19th place in the state rankings. Eastlake and Canutillo were the only other area schools that I found in the final state rankings. Eastlake placed 40th and Canutillo took 54th place. Hamlin Dartez of Burges High School brought home a silver medal for his second place finish in the 200 meter dash. Burges also place 6th in the 4x400 meter relay. Other 5A boys with top 10 finishes were Joshua Hernandez-8th place in the shot put, Milo Rios of Eastlake finished 4th in the high jump, and Khori Roberts of Canutillo finished 6th in the 400 meter run.

5A Girls': Burges High School finished with a 17th place in the state rankings while Chapin ended the state meet in 42nd place. Arielle Mack of Burges brought home a bronze medal with her 3rd place finish in the girls' long jump. She barely missed bring home another bronze medal when she finished 4th in the triple jump. Jadsia Warren of Chapin had a 5th place finish in the 200 meter run and a 6th place finish in the 400 meter run. Other top 10 finishes were Anisa Burciaga of Canutillo-8th place 1600 meter run, Priscilla Tubbs of Jefferson-9th place 300 meter hurdles, Andrea Abeyta of Hanks-8th place 800 meter run, Sandra Thornton-9th place 100 meter hurdles, and the Chapin 4x100 relay team finished in 9th place.

4A Boys': No medals or state rankings that I could find.

4A Girls': Clint Moutain View finished 33rd in the state rankings. Michelle Estrada finished in 6th place in the 1600 meter run.

2016 TAPPS Track and Field Updates:

The El Paso area TAPPS schools didn't fare any better than their public school counterparts in their state championship competitions. There were no team titles but several individuals won medals including at least one gold medal. The following is a breakdown on the results for Cathedral High School and Jesus Chapel:

Cathedral High School finished in 9th place in TAPPS 5A competition. Top finishers for the Irish were Ian Smith with a silver medal in the 800 meter run and Louie Barba with a second place finish in the 3200 meter run. Brandon Seagraves won two bronze medals in the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run.

Jesus Chapel boys finished in 6th place in the TAPPS 1A competition. Joseph Belle won three bronze medals for the 110 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles, and for being a member of the 4x200 meter relay team.

Jesus Chapel's girls' team finished in 12th place in the 1A TAPPS competition. Top performer for Jesus Chapel was Gracie Gomez who won a gold medal for the shot put and a bronze medal for the discus throw.

2014 Update: San Elizario High School became the first boys UIL cross country team from the El Paso area to win a state championship since 1999. Coach Cesar Morales stated that his team went to the meet not thinking of a state championship but only to do the best they could. His team certain met that goal and far exceeded it. San Elizario scored a team low 79 points to outpace runner up Lufkin Hudson's 105 points. Clint High School, another El Paso area team, finished 4 th with a score of 173 points. Top performers for San Elizario were Michael Johnson (9 th place), Ulises Cardoza (10 th place), and Erik Arambula (18 th place). Other main contributors were Alex Fernandez (46 th place), Angel Rangel (48 th place), Daniel Alvarez (58 th place) and Miguel Garcia (80 th place).

2015 UPDATE: San Elizario defended its Conference 4A UIL Cross Country State Championship in weather full of mud and rain.

T he Eagles earned back-to-back state crowns scoring an impressive 53 points -- well ahead of their competition. San Elizario had six runners all place in the top 25. They are all as follows.

Erick Arambula (first place), Ulises Cardoza (17th, 17:15.59), Miguel Garcia (18th, 17:17.83) Leo Gomez (20th, 17:19.37) David Ceballos (23rd, 17:24.98) and Carlos Pargas (24th, 17:31.26). It's seventh runner, Adrian Contreras was 60th in 18:05.18.

Tornillo also placed 4th in their class.

More on Alan Culpepper

Coronado High School's, Alan Culpepper is without a doubt the best cross country track star (if not the best overall track and field star) that El Paso has ever seen. He not only won the two individual cross country championships that I have already written about but also won three other state championships in track and field events. He won the gold medal in the 1600 meter run in 1989 with a winning time of 4:20.5 and again in 1990 with a time of 4:12.3. Alan Culpepper capped his 1990 season by winning the gold medal in the 3200 meter run with a winning time of 9:15.9.

Culpepper would attend the University of Colorado after graduating from Coronado High School where he could continue his development which would eventually lead to him being selected to the United States Olympic Team in both 2000 and 2004. He won the 2004 US Olympic Trials and finished 12 th in the Athens' Olympics. In addition to making two Olympic squads, Alan Culpepper has also been a member of four world championship teams, competed in four Boston Marathons, won three US Cross Country Titles, won two 10.000 meter track titles and one title at 5000 meters. He ran a 2:09:44 times at the Chicago Marathon and is tied with Alberto Salazar for the fastest debut marathon time by an American athlete. His personal best time for the mile is 3:55.6, 13.25 for 5K, and 27.23 for the 10K. Alan Culpepper was inducted to the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Cross Country and the TAPPS Schools 2015 Cross Country Track Update

San Elizario High School only dreamed of winning a state championship in cross country track in 2014. The Eagles were determined to defend their 4A title in 2015 despite losing several competitors from the 2014 team, including Michael Johnson. San Elizario surpassed their own expectations and won the 2015 UIL 4A Cross Country State Championship by scoring 53 points and placing six of its' seven runners in the top 25. Not only did the Eagles win the state championship but Erik Arambula won the individual gold medal at the meet. Team members for the two time defending state champions were Ulises Cardoza 17 th place, Miguel Garcia 18 th place, Leo Gomez 20 th place, David Ceballos 23 rd place, Carlos Pargas 24 th place, and Adrian Contreras 60 th place. Congratulations to the Eagles.

Cathedral High School also had hopes of defending its' 2014 TAPPS Cross Country State Championship. The Irish ended up finishing in second place only trailing its' rival San Antonio Antonian. Louie Barba was the top Cathedral runner finishing in second place while Brandon Seagraves finished in 7 th place.

2014 Update

The Cathedral High School cross country team spent an agonizing year following the 2013 season. The Irish had come up two points short of winning the TAPPS Division I Cross Country State Championship losing to San Antonio Antonian. Coach Adrian Dodds said that his squad made a year-long commitment to not finishing runner up again. His team certainly lived up to their promise. Cathedral placed four runners in the top 10 places and scored a team low 34 points to win the 2014 TAPPS Division I Cross Country State Championship. Eric Peters and Louie Barba finished first and second respectively to pace the Irish squad. Peters ran the 3.1 mile course 16:22.4 beating teammate Barba by five seconds and San Antonio's Justin Garcia by 8 seconds. Ryan Smith and Esteban Esquivel-Reyes also finished in the top 10 for Cathedral. Other key contributors were Ricardo Lozoya (13 th place), Christopher Janicki (22 nd place), and Ronaldo Lopez (31 st place). The championship was even sweeter since Cathedral defeat the previous year's champion, San Antonio Antonian (2 nd place 46 points) and Houston Awty (3 rd place 84 points). It was Cathedral's first cross country championship since 2006.

The private and parochial schools in El Paso have not done as well as the public school in cross country track. I can only find 4 other instances, prior to Cathedral's 2014 championship, where an individual or a team has won a state championship. The list below shows results for 4 th place finishes or better.

Track and Field

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has sanctioned state championships in boys' track and field events since 1909 and girls' track and field events since 1972. The history for El Paso public high schools doesn't go quite that far back. Many individuals have done very well in the various track and field events over the years but a team championship has eluded both the boys and girls. Austin High School finished 3 rd in the team standings in 1940 as did Burges High School in 2012. The Eastwood High School track team of 1981 had the talent to win the state title. The Troopers had a very strong team and several outstanding athletes. Toby Bell was a nationally ranked pole vaulter who had a 16 foot plus vault in 1981. Jim Jordan had a top 5 United States ranking in the shot put and discus throw. Eastwood also had a very good 1600 meter relay team. Things didn't go well at the state meet. Toby Bell finished tied for 2 nd in the pole vault, Jim Jordan did win a state championship in the shot put but didn't qualify for the discus throw at the district meet. Eastwood's 1600 meter relay team failed to score any points at the state meet and couldn't be used in other events. Terri Gent (has a webpage on Eastwood track) believes that El Paso teams, including the '81 Trooper, are at a disadvantage at the state meet. Teams that don't have a good representation in relay events are basically left with little opportunity to win the state championships since relay events score double points. The state has relay events for 4x100m, 4x200m, and the 4x400 m which are all sprint races. There is no 4x1600m relay so Eastwood could not score any points in those events. Eastwood had four very good athletes in the 1600m and 3200m but only two athletes per event are allowed to qualify for state. The state meet also allows sprinters to compete in five events but long distance runners cannot run in all the long distance events and most will not do well in shot put and discus throw. All of these factors prohibited Eastwood from winning the state championship in 1981. Even with the disadvantages, the Troopers finished 8 th in the 5A rankings for that year. I have decided to show how the athletes from each high school have performed instead of doing a year by year chart. The list shows only 1 st place finishes which means each of the individuals listed won the Texas UIL Track and Field State Championship. The list does not include cross country championships I have already covered earlier in the chapter.

2015 Track and Field Update

Benavidez and Johnson win gold medals

El Paso area high schools entered the 2015 Track and Field State Tournament little chance to win a team title but that didn't mean that El Paso area individuals couldn't shine for their respective schools and the Sun City. That's exactly what happened. El Paso area tracksters brought home 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 1 bronze medal, 2 4 th place finishes and several other top 10 finishes. As if that wasn't enough, Franklin High School's Paulo Benavidez set a 6A state record in the pole vault.

Paulo Benavidez won the 2014 state title in the pole vault and he was determined to be a two time state champion in 2015. He certainly accomplished that goal. Benavidez not only won the 2015 6A pole vault event but he set a state record in the process. His winning vault was measured at 17 feet 6.5 inches which shattered his own record from 2014 by almost a foot. Benavidez wasn't satisfied with his new record and was trying to reach 18 feet when he ran out of attempts. Benavidez graduates from Franklin High School as a two time state champion.

Maybe an even more impressive performance was turned in by San Elizario's Michael Johnson. Johnson won two bronze medals in 2014 and was determined to win the state championships in those two events in 2015. He did just that. Johnson won the gold medal in the Boys 4A 800 meter run with a winning time of 1:54.49 and the captured his second gold medal in the 4A 1600 meter run in a time of 4:23.54. It's been quite a year for Michael Johnson and San Elizario High School. Johnson was a member of San Elizario's 2014 Cross Country championship team and the school just won the 4A Soccer title.

Arielle Mack of Burges High School had a very good weekend. She won a silver medal in the 5A Girls Triple Jump and also recorded a 4 th place finish in the 5A Girls Long jump.

Paulo Benavidez's Franklin team mate Cody Johnson added more glory for the west-side school. Johnson won the bronze medals in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 37.15 seconds. Johnson was so happy with the finish that video showed him falling to the track in amazement of his strong finish.

Dartez Hamlin of Burges High School added to his 2014 laurels by finishing 4 th in the 5A Boys 200 meter dash. He also finished 7 th in the 5A Boys 100 meter dash.

Other strong performances were turned in by Del Valle's Joshua Hernandez (5 th in the 5A shot put), Jadsia Warren (5 th in the 5A Girls 400 meter dash), Kiana Covington of Hanks (8 th place in the 5A 400 meter dash), Billy Cuellar of Eastlake (7 th in the 5A Boys 300 meter hurdles) and Burges' Javier Gaytan (8 th in the 5A Boys 1600 meter run).

Franklin High School finished 9 th in the Boys 6A standings thanks to the strong performances by Benavidez and Johnson. Burges High School's girls team finished the tournament ranked 19 th in the state. San Elizario was the area's top finisher with a very strong 7 th place finish in the 4A Boys rankings. Again, quite a year for San Elizario (2 Team State Championships, 2 individual state titles, and a 7 th place finish).

2014 Track and Field Results

It was a good year for several individual athletes from El Paso area high schools and three boy's teams in 4A finished the state tournament ranked in the top twenty. Parkland High School, led by Anthony Dudley, finished in a very respectable 8 th place at the state meet. Dudley won an individual state championship in the 4A Discus Throw with a winning toss of 190'06''and also won a silver medal in the 4A Shot Put with a 55'04'' effort. Burges High School finished the tournament in 13 th place. The Mustangs were paced by Keandre Bates who won an individual state championship in the 4A Triple Jump with a leap of 48'08'' and finished 6 th in the 4A Long Jump with a jump of 23'02''. Bates was also a member of the Burges 4A 4x400 meter relay team that took 6 th place. Other relay members were Dartez Hamlin, Frank Portillo, and Andrew Vasquez. Dartez Hamlin also had a 7 th place finish in the 4A 200 meter dash. San Elizario High School finished the tournament in 14 th place and were paced by two bronze medal performances by Michael Johnson. Johnson finished 3 rd in the 4A 800 Meter Run with a time of 1:53.05 and the 4A 1600 Meter Run with a time of 4:17.49. Chapin High School's, Kwame Anane finished 4 th in the 4A Triple Jump with a leap of 47'00''. Jadsia Warren of Chapin High School had the best performance by a girl from a 4A high school. She had a 4 th place finish in the 400 Meter Dash.

El Paso's 5A high schools also had a pair of gold medal performances. Franklin High School's, Paulo Benavidez won the 5A Pole Vault with a winning vault of 16'06''. El Dorado High School's, Olamide Olowe won an individual state championship in the 5A Girls 400 Meter Dash with a winning time of 54.67 seconds. Elise Machen of Franklin High School won a bronze medal in the 5A Girls Pole Vault with a 13'00'' vault. Cameron Laverty of Americas High School finished 5 th in the 5A 800 Meter Run while team mate Isaiah Washington finished in 9 th place in the 5A 200 Meter dash. The Franklin High School boys finished the state meet with an 18 th place finish and El Dorado High School girls were the top El Paso finisher with a 23 rd place finish.

El Paso area high schools still haven't won a state championship in track and field and appear to have a long way to go before that feat is accomplished. A team must have strong performances by its relay teams in order to win the team title. El Paso has some fine track athletes and maybe some high school will put it all together in the future and bring home a championship. Until then, El Paso will have to settle for strong individual performances from its track athletes.

More on Javier Montez

El Paso has produced two athletes that went on to compete in the Olympic Games. I have already written about Coronado High School's Alan Culpepper. Now let me write about Bowie High School's Javier Montez. Javier Montez attended Bowie in the late 1940's and won two State Championships in 1947 and 1948 competing in the one mile run. Montez would go on to compete for Texas Western College (UTEP) in the old Border Conference. UTEP has produced many Olympians but Javier Montez was the first. He dominated the one and two mile distances at the collegiate and international level. He was a three event champion at the Border Conference Track Meet posting winning times for the mile, two miles, and 800 meters. Javier Montez set meet records at the Border Conference, the Texas Relays, and California Medley Relay. Montez set a record for the mile at the NAIB meet and also set the record for the 1500 meter run at the Texas Relays. He finished third in the 1952 AAU meet at the distance of 1500 meters. This would earn him a spot on the United States Olympic Team that competed in the Helsinki summer games. Montez finished 6 th in his heat and would not qualify for the finals but he still ranked as one of the finest athletes in the world. Montez posted personal best times of 3:51.1 at 1500 meters, 4:13.4 in the mile and 9:24.3 in the two mile. He once finished slightly behind England's Roger Bannister in a one mile race. Bannister would later record a sub 4 minute mile. Javier Montez would graduate from UTEP and eventually work for the city of El Paso. He was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in 1965 and posthumously to the UTEP Hall of Fame in 2007. Javier Montez passed away in 2003.

The TAPPS Schools in Track and Field

No El Paso public high school has ever won a track and field championship. The story is different for the private and parochial schools in El Paso. Jesus Chapel High School has won 6 state championships in track and field, four by the boys' team and two by the girls' team. The TAPP schools have also competed very well on an individual basis. The following is a list of championships that I could find on TAPPS website. I have omitted any cross country championships which I have already written about.

2015 Update

The El Paso Faith Christian Academy girls' team won the 2015 Division I TCAL Track and Field State Championship with a score of 173 points easily defeating runner-up San Marcos Baptist 132 points. The Lady Lions won 4 individual gold medals, 7 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals. Gabrielle Gandara won 2 individual gold medals in the 300 meter hurdles (50.85 seconds) and the 100 meter hurdles (17.14 seconds). She also won a silver medals in the long jump (15'03'') and high jump (4'06''). Kayla Jeffries won two individual gold medals in the triple jump (30'04'') and the high jump (4'10''). Jeffries also won a silver medal in the 400 meter run (1:01.88). Faith Christian took silver medals in the 4x400 relay (4:37.09), 1600 meter run (Paula Chacon 6:32.2), 3200 meter run (Madison Macias 14:25.71),and shot put (Natalie Buckhalter 31'04.25). Bronze medalists were Madison Macias in the 1600 meter run, 4x200 relay team, Paula Chacon in the 800 meter run, the 4x100 relay team, and Natalie Buckhalter in the discus throw. Other girls that scored points were Madison Macias (4 th place 800 meter run), Perla Aguilera (4 th place 3200 meter run), and Miranda Carter (6 th place 3200 meter run).

The Faith Christian boys' team finished in 4 th place at the 2015 Division I TCAL Track and Field State Championship. Nick Buckhalter won an individual gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 36'01'' and Sedric Davis won the gold medal in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 19.65 seconds.

The TAPPS schools didn't fare as well as the private schools in track and field although there were some very good individual or relay efforts. The Jesus Chapel girls finished 6 th in the 1A TAPPS rankings while the Charger boys finished 11 th in the team rankings. Cathedral finished 8 th in the TAPPS 5A team standings. The Jesus Chapel girls 4x200 meter relay team finished 2nd. Team members were Jordan Muller, Ruby Gonzalez, Nayeli Olivares, and Adriana Saucedo. Adriana Saucedo won a bronze medal in the girls 200 meter dash. Gracie Gomez brought home a bronze medal in the shot put. Cathedral had strong performances from Esteban-Esquivel Reyes in the 800 meter run (2 nd place) and 1600 meter run (3 rd place). Eric Peters won a silver medal in the 3200 meter run while Louis Barba finished 3 rd in the same event.
