Massive Juarez factory fire lights up sky, visible in El Paso

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico -- A factory that makes wooden pallets in Juarez caught fire late Friday night.

It lit up the night sky and sent plumes of smoke that were visible from El Paso. (You can see video at the top of this article.)

The massive fire broke out around 9 p.m. near the intersection of Avenida Reforma and Juan Escutia in the Melchor Ocampo neighborhood.

Juarez officials said the factory was a total loss. No injuries have been reported.

Investigators have not said what caused the fire, but people in surrounding neighborhoods were evacuated.

Juarez officials told ABC-7's news partners at Canal 44 that ecology authorities had previously fined the factory for having accumulated flammable material in a single place.
