Derek Chauvin sentenced for violating George Floyd’s civil rights

The family of George Floyd is reacting to the news that his murderer will spend more time in prison. This latest sentence is for a federal charge and it doesn't end the string of court cases tied to the killing.

Derek Chauvin will serve additional time behind bars. The former Minneapolis police officer was sentenced in federal court yesterday for violating George Floyd's civil rights. He had pleaded guilty last December. He's also in prison for state charges.

Under Minnesota law, he was eligible for supervised release in fifteen years.

Now, he'll serve a concurrent twenty-one years for the federal charge minus time served. That's between what the defense and prosecution had requested.

Chauvin is appealing his murder conviction. He also pleaded guilty to violating the civil rights of a fourteen-year-old boy in 2017, by using excessive force. He faces civil suits for that and another incident.

Three ex-officers who were with Chauvin when he killed Floyd are also convicted of federal civil rights violations. They have yet to be sentenced.
