EPPD

EL PASO, Texas -- A man was shot by an El Paso Police officer after attacking the officer with a knife at the 4500 block of Hondo Pass on September 2.

According to police, an off-duty Texas Tech police officer called for police assistance after 22-year-old Jonathan Aguilar Kurzenberger threatened her with a knife. The Texas Tech officer had been following Kurzenberger, who had committed a theft from the Neighborhood Walmart where she was working.

A responding officer located Kurzenberger on the 4500 block of Hondo Pass, where Kurzenberger attacked the officer and was shot.

Other assisting officers rendered first aid to Kurzenberger, and he was later admitted to University Medical Center for treatment.

Kurzenberger was released from UMC Friday and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.

Police said Kurzenberger was wanted for prior charges for cruelty to animals and assault on a public servant under bonds of $25,000 and $5,000 issued by Judge Patricia Juarez Estrada.

Kurzenberger is charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault on a peace officer under bonds of $150,000 and $50,000.
