‘Snazzy On Call:’ El Paso woman creates in-home salon business after losing her mother to Alzheimer’s

EL PASO, Texas-- Gina Silverman-Smith is the mother of a 20-year-old special needs child and was the caretaker of her late mother when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

"My mom loved getting her hair and nails done and it was like a treat for her to feel like a lady and feel good and clean," said Silverman-Smith.

Silverman-Smith enjoyed taking her mom out to get her hair and nails done. When her mother began to have difficulties getting up and walking around it also became difficult for Silverman-Smith to take her mom to the salon.

"Growing up with my special needs son and my mother, it is so difficult to take somebody with a disease or disability out for a regular haircut or just getting their hair or nails done," said Silverman-Smith.

She decided to do some research and see if an in-home hair and nail service existed in the area.

"I didn't find anything here and I thought that I had to do this," said Silverman-Smith.

'Snazzy On Call' was created by Silverman-smith in honor of her mother who passed away from Alzheimer's two years ago.

"I have to do this this is for my mom. This has inspired me to do this for her," said Silverman-Smith.

'Snazzy On Call' is an in-home professional hair and nail service for men and women in nursing facilities, rehab facilities or hospitals.

Customers or their care takers can call the number on the businesses website and set up an appointment over the phone. Silverman-Smith prefers not having an app or booking appointments directly online because she wants to make sure that her stylists know more about the clients. They ask clients for their special needs and how they can personally cater to them.

Snazzy on Call stylists are trained professionals who have experience working in hospitals or nursing homes.

"Every person we hire is very understanding and someone I would put with my mother, and that's how I base it," explained Silverman-Smith.

The salon equipment supplied by 'Snazzy On Call' caters to clients that may not be able to move around as easily, are bed bound or in a wheelchair.

After posting about her new business on Facebook, the response was overwhelming for Silverman-Smith.

"All the positive feedback reinforces my thinking of, thanks goodness this is going well and I'm providing it."

But for Silverman-Smith, knowing that her mom would've been proud of her new business is what matters to her most.

"I can feel her everyday and I think she's looking down on me going, 'alright, this is perfect. This is exactly what we need in El Paso'."

Silverman-Smith hopes to expand her business to more care facilities and nursing homes across the city.
