17 dead, 25 inmates escaped Cereso after riot New Year’s Day

UPDATE JAN. 2 -- The death toll has risen to 17, and the number of inmates that have escaped is 25 as the search continues.

UPDATE 3:27 P.M. -- 13 people were injured in Sunday's riot in addition to the 14 deaths, according to the Attorney General's Office of the State of Chihuahua.

The Attorney General's Office said that inmates that escaped carried out actions against antagonistic groups.

According to preliminary investigations, armed individuals in armored vehicles arrived at the prison around 7 a.m. and shot at security officers.

Minutes prior, an armed attack against Municipal Police was reported on Manuel Gómez Morín Avenue. After, a chase led to the capture of four men and the seizure of a Ford Expedition.

Later on, preventative agents held off the armed aggression of two crew members of a Hummer-type vehicle on Avenida Panamericana. The two crew members were killed.

The Municipal Public Security Secretariat, State Public Security Secretariat, State Investigation Agency, Mexican Army and National Guard collectively implemented a strategic operation Sunday.

A multidisciplinary team with the Northern District Prosecutor's Office is working to establish when and where events happened.

CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico -- 14 are dead and 24 inmates escaped after a riot took place at El Centro Estatal de Reinserción Social (Cereso) Sunday morning, El Diario reported.

The deaths include 10 guards and four inmates.

The Ninth Motorized Cavalry Regiment and the State Investigation Agency have secured the prison after entering and checking all its areas.

El Diario attributed a military report which said six trucks with armed personnel arrived at the prison where a visitor was already waiting and opened fire, then entering the prison and taking at least 24 inmates from the prison.

Municipal Public Security Secretariat are searching several residents and have managed to apprehend part of the group.
