Video shows moment officer accidentally fired gun inside Las Cruces school

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico — ABC-7 on Friday obtained video that shows a police officer who recently fired his weapon inside a Las Cruces middle school and is facing a firearms charge. (Watch it in the video player at the top of this article)

Officer Francisco Estrada is charged with a misdemeanor count of prohibited use of a firearm for the Dec. 4 incident.

The security video shows Estrada accidentally firing his gun inside the offices at Picacho Middle School, where he was assigned. No one was struck by the discharged bullet which the video shows hitting a wall.

The Las Cruces Police Department said Estrada has worked for the department for eight years and been a school resource officer for four. The department said he is currently on desk duty while an internal affairs investigation takes place.
