El Dorado High School Students to join in nationwide school walkouts

UPDATE - Approximately one hundred students took part in a protest from noon to 1 p.m outside El Dorado High School.

"I fear for my kids everyday...just like any other parent. El Dorado has a few lockdowns and many threats and I;'m actually thinking about doing home school. I do support my kids and anything they do as long as it's something they believe in, and this...this is definitely something they believe in," said El Dorado parent Rosa Hinojosa Posada.

Students ABC-7 spoke with chanted "No More Silence, Stop Gun Violence" and "Protect kids, not guns."

Many of the participants ABC-7 spoke with said they could face consequences for being late or missing class entirely.

Socorro Independent School District released this statement in response to Wednesday's walkout;

"Dozens of high school students participated in walkouts today, primarily during their lunch period. The district fully supports students’ first amendment right and encourage students to be active participants in their community; however, the student code of conduct and Policy FNAB clearly state that student demonstrations and similar activities are prohibited during instructional times. If students chose to walk out and were late to class, they will be marked tardy, and if they do not attend class, they will be marked truant," said the district.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - El Paso High School students will be joining a nationwide walkout as part of a call for action in the wake of the mass shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, TN.

El Dorado High School students will be participating, according to a spokesperson from Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund.

The spokesperson did not mention other students from different schools set to participate, but ABC-7 has seen social media posts suggesting other student bodies may also walkout.

The deadly shooting in Nashville killed six people.
