19-year-old accused of shooting woman, forcing her to say she shot herself

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- An El Paso man is facing aggravated assault charges after police accused him of shooting a woman.

The shooting happened on the 4400 block of Hueco Avenue in Central El Paso on April 2.

Officers were called out on reports of family violence.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 19-year-old woman who had just returned from the hospital where she was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

She told officers that 19-yera-old Irwin Chavira had shot her, then coerced her into telling hospital staff that she had shot herself.

Chavira had already left the house. It took officials several weeks to find him.

Chavira was picked up by the US Marshalls Task Force on April 20, 2023. He is being held on a $160,000 bond.
