NMSU unveils southern New Mexico’s only autism medical diagnosis center
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- New Mexico State University is celebrating the new Papen-Aprendamos Autism Diagnostic Center. The center is housed within the College of Health, Education and Social Transformation's O'Donnell Hall.
The university hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new center, as well as the Aprendamos Intervention Team, P.A. Lecture Hall Wednesday. Both have been recently renamed in honor of Aprendamos Services CEO Abel Covarrubias and former State Senator Mary Kay Papen.
Papen first proposed the facility in past state legislation. Covarrubias provided funding for the project. The Aprendamos Family of Services offers intervention and services for young children.
Covarrubias and his wife also provided funding for the establishment of a new scholarship, called the Aprendamos Intervention Team Endowment Scholarship.
The Papen-Aprendamos Autism Diagnostic Center provides the only centralized place for medical autism diagnoses in southern New Mexico. NMSU says the center aims to help residents of all ages.
