Gas prices remain close to $4 a gallon across West Texas

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Gas Prices in El Paso County sit at an average of $3.87, with residents of surrounding West Texas Counties like Hudspeth paying $3.92 a gallon and Culberson County paying $3.82 a gallon.

ABC-7 spoke with Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.com, about what's led to the recent pain at the pump.

"That's the problem here in much of El Paso and west is that tremendous heat has really battered refineries this summer, slowed them down, caused unexpected outages and disruptions to the point where gasoline supply has been hammered as a result," said De Haan.

De Haan also spoke about what's being done to try and alleviate some of the high gas prices at the federal level.

"The [Environmental Protection Agency] has issued a waiver allowing stations to sell gasoline that doesn't meet those seasonal requirements. It'll work just fine in your car.

The seasonal requirements De Haan mentioned are the summer and winter blends that are sold at different months. This waiver from the EPA is allowing the sale of the winter blend at gas stations earlier than usual.
