El Pasoan wins Emmy while pursuing his childhood dream
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- "It started with a dream. When I was a little kid, I used to look at a globe, spin it, close my eyes and put my finger there," says YouTuber and film maker, Alex Chacon.
At 22, Chacon left medical school and sold all his belongings to travel the world on his motorcycle.
It was a difficult decision.
"Being from El Paso and coming from a Mexican family, it's not exactly the easiest conversation," Chacon said.
Chacon's mother, Lorena Salas, was naturally worried.
"I was very worried about it. You know, traveling all over the world on his motorcycle is not easy for a mother," said Salas.
Chacon risked it all and used a camera to record his adventures.
He made a blog, then created YouTube videos, which led to the making of a short documentary film called Wyoming, a Journey of Inspiration.
In it, he takes us on a two-in-a-half week motorcycle ride, revealing Chacon's more vulnerable side.
"I was going through a really tough time emotionally, at that time. So I tried to capture my journey and adventure in a very organic, authentic, and emotional way."
His hard work and dedicated landed him an Emmy.
Chacon says El Paso gave him an emotional foundation to travel.
"Locations where you have a little kid walking up to you and you know, they grab your little hand and you realize you're living in the street in poverty," says Chacon.
Due to difficult moments like these, there were times Chacon wanted to give up and go home, but with the support of his home town, he never gave up his travels.
