Lower Valley Gas Leak Forces Evacuation, Traffic Diversions

EL PASO, Tx. – A gas leak in the city’s Lower Valley forces the evacuation of several homes and a nearby business.

Officials were called out to the 200 block of North Zaragoza just before 10:40am Thursday morning.

According to officials, a gas line in the area somehow ruptured, forcing the evacuation of several homes near the intersection of Zaragoza and Sunland Avenue.

Police tell ABC-7 that north- and southbound traffic on Zaragoza has been diverted, as well as east-west traffic on Sunland Avenue.

Emergency radio transmissions indicated that Texas Gas Service crews may have to dig up a portion of the street to reach the damaged line.

Officials tell ABC-7 Sun Metro dispatched 1 bus to the area to assist in transporting the neighborhood’s evacuees.

According to fire officials, the evacuation was a precautionary measure. Residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly before 1pm.
