2 EPISD Board Members Resign

EL PASO, Tx. – Officials with the area’s largest school district announce the sudden resignation of two school board members.

In a late Wednesday afternoon news release, the Board of Trustees of the El Paso Independent School District announced that they received the resignations of Trustee Carlos Cordova, District 2, and Trustee Sal Mena, Jr., District 3.

According to EPISD officials, both individuals were elected to represent their respective districts, serving voluntarily. Mr. Cordova has served EPISD for a total of 9 years having run unopposed in the 2007 election.

Prior to that, Mr. Cordova had been a veteran teacher, and coach for 38 years. He is fondly known in the community by many as coach.

Officials say Mena served four terms, 1989-93, 93-97, 2001-05 as trustee and was Board President during 2003-05.

District officials say that Mr. Cordova’s term expires in 2011 while Mr. Mena’s ends 2009. Both resignation letters cited health problems as a major consideration for their resignations.

EPISD officials say “We sincerely hope their health improves, and wish them both well.”

According to officials, there are specific guidelines that must be followed when there is a vacancy on the Board of Trustees.

The following statement from EPISD Superintendent Dr. Lorenzo Garcia was sent to ABC-7 by EPISD officials:

According to school district officials, the Board of Trustees will “continue to focus on and conduct the crucial mission of educating children in EPISD.”

Officials tell ABC-7 that during the next board meeting on September 11, 2007, there will be discussions regarding the options for filling the vacancy, whether by appointment or special election.
