Students Not Paid For Working Concession Stands
EL PASO, TX – Students from several charity organizations working concession stands at Cohen Stadium during Diablos games are not directly paid for their work.
Rocky Mountain Concessions, the company in charge of concessions at the stadium, hires students from non-profit organizations and the money they earn is credited to their organizations.
Charity Smith tells ABC-7 her daughter was not being paid for the amount work she does at theconcession stands. “She has worked many hours for many games and has only been paid $46 for three days of work,” she said.
Her daughter should not be getting paid for her work as an employee and should only receive money that is meant for her fundraising organization, said Valerie Venegas, the spokeswoman for Cohen Stadium. “They are not supposed to be paying every student individually, because at that point, that organization becomes a for-profit organization and they could no longer file as a non-profit,” she said.
Venegas stated a check is given to the group leader of the organization and it is their job to figure out whata student’sparticular percentage is. Group sponsors are given an orientation before the season begins to clear up any confusion about the checks students will receive, she went on to state.
Sometimes, it can take a while for checks to be given to the group leaders since the checks are cut from an office in Austin, Venegas added. According to her, Rocky Mountain Concessions is currently investigating how checks are distributed to group leaders to avoid any further problems.
