Debate Over Location Of Proposed Centralized Bus Terminal

EL PASO, TX. – Those behind a project to create a centralized bus terminal for El Paso saysimilar projects havebrought economic growth to other cities across the Southwest.

But where to locatethe new terminal is still in debate. The proposed El Camino Real Transit Terminalwould be a large central bus terminal from whichbus companies, like Greyhound, would operate. There are six possible sites for the terminal, but an independent third party was hired by the city to come, evaluate all the sites and choose the spot they thought made the most sense for the terminal.

That group settled on the old Union Station siteat 700 San Fransisco street in central El Paso. The findings were discussed and presented to the community to get their feedback in a meeting Wednesday at City Hall. Unfortunately, members from thepublic did not show up. The presentation went on anyway and it was explained that Sun Metro would manage the terminal, but would only use it as a stop.

The federal government is supplying the money needed to build the terminal so this project will go forward, but where the terminal will be built is still not set in stone. This project will be moving forward, but the location is not positively determined. The presentation still has to be made to city officials for final approval. And there will be additional meetings for the public in the future.
