Games Of Texas May Be Coming To El Paso

EL PASO, TX. – El Paso is a finalist to host another big athletic event that could bring the city major money.

The El Paso Sports Commission already helped the city land a big bowling tournament in 2010. Now the commission hopes to rope in the 2012 and 2013 Games of Texas which are akin toa state-wide olympics.

The estimated economic impact could be $10 million dollars each year. Among the possible El Paso venues to host the games are the County Coliseum, Nation’s Tobin Recreation Center, Bowie High School Stadium and the San Juan Recreation Center. “Sports tourism is economic tourism and it puts heads in beds, predominantly on weekends when room occupancy is low. So this is a good chance for us,” said the El Paso Sports Commission President, Brian Kennedy.

The choices have been narroweddown to El Paso and Corpus Christito hostthe games. A decision will be made Monday.
