UTEP Enrollment Surpasses 20,000

EL PASO, TX. – Enrollment at the University of Texas at El Paso has surpassed 20,000 students — marking the largest enrollment in the university’s 93-year history.

“We are pleased that so many students come to us each year with their dreams and aspirations,” UTEP President Diana Natalicio said. “We will do everything we can to help make those dreams come true.” Census Day data for the fall 2007 semester show a total student enrollment of 20,154 — a 1.6 percent increase over last fall. This semester’s figures mark the sixth consecutive record fall enrollment at UTEP Fall Semester.

Enrollment 2007 20,154 2006 19,842 2005 19,264 2004 18,918 2003 18,542 2002 17,232

Enrollment data shows increases in all three classifications of students – undergraduates, graduates and doctoral. Undergraduate enrollment is up 1.3% to 16,769; Graduate enrollment is up 2.4%to 2,734; Doctoral enrollment is up 4.2% to 395. University officials attribute the increased enrollment to growth in degree offerings, academic and research opportunities, and new and improved tuition assistance plans.

UTEP’s achievements as the top producer of Hispanic professionals in an array of fields continue to garner national attention, making the university a national leader in educating minorities. “Our students are making an important investment in their futures and the future of this community,” Natalicio said, “and UTEP will continue to develop new and exciting opportunities for talented young people in this Paso del Norte region.”

The University of Texas at El Paso is a major research university at the heart of the U.S.-Mexico border committed to the ideals of access and excellence. A leader among Hispanic-serving institutions, UTEP enrolls more than 20,000 students and is the only doctoral research university in the nation with a student body that is a majority Mexican American.

UTEP offers 81 bachelor’s degrees, more than 70 master’s-level degrees and programs, and 14 doctorates. UTEP’s $46 million in research spending a year affords undergraduate and graduate students numerous hands-on research opportunities in an array of fields.
