Motorcyclist Crashes Into Back Of Work Truck On I-10

EL PASO, TX. – A man is fighting for his life Thursday morning after crashing his motorcycle into a work crew truck on Interstate-10, closing down part of the freeway until 2 a.m.

El Paso Police spokesman Javier Sambrano said careless driving was the cause, “[There were] very serious injuries that this individual sustained as a result of the collision.”

Officials say just after 8 p.m. Wednesday night, a man was driving his motorcycle north on U.S. Highway-54, coming in from the Bridge of the Americas.

Officials say he tried to merge onto I-10 East near Raynolds, at the same time a construction truck was moving across the entrance of the shoulder.

The motorcycle then slammed into the back of the truck, hitting the fuel tank.

Diesel fuel leaked onto the ground.

When emergency crews arrived on the scene – they had to cut the cyclist out of his clothes in order to get to his injuries. He was taken to R.E. Thomason Hospital in critical condition. No one else was injured in the crash.

Police say speed was a factor – something they also say is just one problem contributing to an increase in motorcycle crashes in the area. Sambrano added “There’s a lot of individuals that buy a motorcycle and don’t have the experience, and drive above their capacity and ability to operate that motorcycle. They’re unable to control the motorcylce, they’re unable to respond to some type of hazard up ahead and they get involved in a collision,”

El Paso Police remind motorcylcists they are offering motorcycle safety classes. They are held every 4th Thursday of the month – except in December. Viewers can call 564-7532 for more info.
