Program Allows Students To Transfer From Deficient School

AUSTIN,Texas(AP) – Students at 831 public schools will be allowed to transfer to other campuses because their schools are among the lowest rated in Texas.

The update comes from the Texas Education Agency. Schools on the list had more than half of their students fail the TAKS in any two of the last three years, or had an “academically unacceptable” rating in any one of the last three years.

Under the Public Education Grant program, schools that accept transfer students get extra funding per pupil. Houston led all districts with 89 schools on the list, while Dallas came in second with 74.

More than ten percent of the state’s schools made the list, but the total number decreased from 924 last year. The transfers will be allowed next school year.

Officials say tougher performance standards in recent years have caused problems for some districts.
