New Mexico Ranks No. 2 For Holiday Thefts

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – A State Farm study ranks New Mexico No. 2 on a list of states for thefts during the holiday season.

But Las Cruces police spokesman Dan Trujillo says people can take steps not to be victims. He says people like to show off their Christmas tree through a window — and there are presents under that tree.

He says people shouldn’t leave the lights on if they’re not home. Trujillo says thieves go to homes and knock to figure out who isn’t home.

He also says people who are out shopping shouldn’t leave purchases in plain sight. He suggests putting purchases in the trunk or taking them home before continuing to shop.
