Distinguished Educator Harry ‘Hut’ Brown Dies

EL PASO –Retired local educator Harry “Hut” Brown has died. He was 78.

Brown’s career in education spanned 41 years, and for 38 of those years he was an employee with the El Paso Independent School District.

Starting as a teacher, he moved up the ranks and became principal at Andress High School, and was later named an associate superintendent for the school district.

Brown retired in 1990, but had volunteered in an educational program at Beall Elementary in recent years.

He received many awards throughout his career. According to his El Paso ISD biography, Brown was named as the Texas Administrator of the Year in 1975 by the Texas School Librarians, honoring his work for securing a new library for Andress High School.

Brown was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach and administrator in 2000. He served as chairman of the Scholarship Committee in 2004, which awards several thousand dollars in scholarships to eligible students each year.

Recently, his former employer named a middle school in Northwest El Paso after him.

Dr. Lorenzo Garcia, superintendent of the El Paso ISD paid tribute to Brown in a statement circulated by the district. “I wish to express my deepest condolences to the Brown family. May the family find comfort in the fact that one of the most beautiful schools in the district bears his name and that his contributions to the students of the El Paso Independent School District will never be forgotten. Students who were privileged to attend the dedication ceremony recently will always carry the memory of sharing that special moment with Mr. Brown. He will be greatly missed.”

Brown died at his home. Acause of deathwas not immediately known.
