Interior Department Seeks Governor’s Opinion Of Anthony Casino
SANTA FE (AP) – The Interior Department wants Governor Richardson’s opinion of a plan by a northern New Mexico pueblo to build a casino in southern New Mexico.
The department’s Bureau of Indian Affairs sent a form letter to the governor Friday. It seeks his position on the casino and any supporting data. A governor’s spokesman says Richardson’s office hadn’t seen the letter as of this morning and couldn’t comment.
The office has 30 days to respond. Jemez Pueblo and Santa Fe developer Gerald Peters want land in Anthony to be put into trust for Jemez Pueblo so it can put a casino on the site.
The land is about 300 miles from Jemez Pueblo. The Interior Department and Richardson must agree to the deal.
