Tips To Avoid Trash Collection Fines

EL PASO — El Paso’s City Services Department is reminding the public to adhere to certain guidelines when it come to rolling out your trash bin to the curb. Residents face fines if they leave their bins too close to a parked car, or if the bins areturned the wrong way on the street or are overflowing with trash.

People should observe a simple rule of thumb: don’t leave your bin in a position where the automated trucks can’t reach it.

The grey trash bins need to be on the curb of a property no later than 5 a.m. on collection days if residents want to avoid paying more for a special trash collection. “We’ve changed the routes so trash is getting picked up a lot earlier,” said Ellen Smyth, of the city’s Solid Waste Management division.

Residents also at risk for a fine if they don’t leave enough room between their blue recyclable bin and their grey trash bin. Smyth says there should be two feet between the two bins, but it may not be a bad idea to leave several yards between the bins, to ensure the contents are collected.

“That way there’s no doubt the trucks can pick up your bins,” Smyth said.
