Clovis Man Sentenced To Prison For Baby’s Death

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) – A man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for the death of a 9-month-old baby left in his care at a Clovis hotel.

State District Judge Stephen Quinn sentenced 44-year-old Leroy Jaramillo of Clovis on Thursday. A state district court jury convicted Jaramillo on Jan. 25 of child abuse resulting in death.

District Attorney Matt Chandler says Jaramillo was arrested Dec. 21, 2005, after a two-hour standoff with police in Clovis.

Cristyan Ibarra died at a Lubbock, Texas, hospital on Oct. 15, 2004, three days after the baby’s mother found the child unresponsive and convulsing at the hotel.

Authorities say the baby died from extensive hemorrhaging of the brain and other head injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
