Boy Pushes Friend Out Of Harm’s Way And Gets Hit By Car

By ABC-7 Reporter Marissa Monroy

EL PASO– It was a walk home best friends Jacob Weldin and Gustavo Roman won’t soon forget. The two were walking home in the 5500 block of Sweetwater in northeast El Paso when they suddenly ran into the street.

“There was a hat in the street that belonged to our friend,” said 8-year-old Gustavo.

Gustavo ran into the street and straight into the path of an oncoming car. Jacob saw the car, pushed hisfriend out of the way, and ended up getting hit instead. “I said, ‘dude, you’re bone is sticking out of your foot,'” Gustavo said.

The impact was so strong it shattered Jacob’s leg in several areas. Ambulances transported both boys to the hospital for treatment. “I thought I was gonna die,” Jacob said.

After extensive surgery, Jacob will have to get around on crutches and a wheelchair, but he’s thankful he was able to help his friend. “I’m bigger and stronger than him,” Jacob said. “I had to push him out of the way.

And from now on, the two promise to be more safe on their walks home.

“I’m never going to walk on the street again,” Gustavo said. “I’m just going to stick to the sidewalks.
