Substance Found At El Paso FBI Building Not Harmful
EL PASO, Texas — A suspicious-looking white powder found at the El Paso FBI building in west El Paso on Wednesday was tested and found not to be harmful, FBI spokeswoman Andrea Simmons said.
The building has been completely reopened. An investigation has been opened regarding the incident and if it appears to match other FBI investigations into similar situations, it will be wrapped into that investigation, Simmons said.
The building was evacuateddue tothe substancefound in the building’s mailroom.
About 3:30 p.m., an employee opened an envelope containing the powder.
The letter was addressed to Mitt Romney in Massachusetts but had a return addressof the El Paso FBI office at 660 S. Mesa Hills.Apparently, when the letter was undeliverable, it was sent back to the return address listed on the letter.
The El Paso Fire Department Hazardous Materials Unit was called to the scene to investigate.
Two mailroom employees were treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene as a precaution.
