LC Fire Officials: Child Playing With Candle Causes Apartment Fire
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A child playing with a candle caused a fireat a Las Cruces apartment Tuesday, Las Cruces fire officials said.
The Las Cruces Fire Department responded to the fire at 2013 South Triviz about 11:45 p.m. Heavy smoke was coming from the apartment. Firefighters extinguished flames in the upstairs bathroom of the apartment within 10 minutes, officials said.
The occupants of the apartment evacuated safely and called 911. No injuries were reported.
The fire was ruled accidental; the child apparently ignited clothes in a bathroom with the candle. Officials estimated the damage at $16,000.
