Man Shot By BP Agents Near Santa Teresa Charged With Drug Trafficking

EL PASO, Texas — A man who was shot by Border Patrol agents after allegedly running over an agent with his vehicle has been charged with drug trafficking, an FBI spokesman said.

Raul Hernandez Arvizu has been released from a hospital and will now face additional charges of assault on a federal officer and felony re-entering of the country.

He had previously served a 30-month stint in federal prison for drug smuggling and was then deported back to Mexico.

On Feb. 20, Border Patrol agents tried to stop a pickup truck driven by Arvizu when Arvizu allegedly ran over an agent. At least one other agent at the scene opened fire, hitting Arvizu at least once.

The agent who was run over had non-life threatening injuries.

The agents involved in the incident have been placed on administrative duty.
