State Reps Propose Stormwater Fee Relief Legislation
EL PASO, Texas — There could be some good news for El Pasoans against the controversial stormwater fees.
On Monday, State Reps. Norma Chvez and Joe Pickett presented House bills to the House Border and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee.
The bills would exempt property held by El Paso County and El Paso County school districts from storm water fees.
That could benefit many across the region because the stormwater fee could cause schools and the county to have to raise their tax rates, so struggling homeowners and small-business owners could essentially get hit even harder. That is something House Bills 2172 and 2173 would work to avoid.
The El Paso Water Utilities Public Service Board (PSB) manages the water and wastewater system for the city of El Paso.
After Storm 2006, the city created a new Stormwater Utility and passed the responsibility to PSB.
Coming up on May 9, El Pasoans will get to vote on whether or not the Stormwater Utility will continue to be administered by the El Paso Water Utilities Public Service Board.
