SISD Expected To Name New Superintendent Tonight

UPDATE: Late Monday SISD trustees named Dr. Xavier de la Torre their finalist for the superintendent.Contract negotiations begin in 21 days. De la Torre will likely not start until July.

EL PASO, Texas — Socorro Independent School District officials are expected to announce their new superintendent Monday evening.

After a long selection process, the district narrowed their search down to two candidates and are expected to announce which of those two men will take over the position at a meeting at district headquarters.

The two candidates are Xavier de la Torre, an associate superintendent in Elk Grove, California, and Anthony Monreal, a deputy superintendent for the California Department of Education.

The candidates had the opportunity to introduce themselves at public forums held for taxpayers in the past few weeks.

The meeting also gave the district a chance to address issues created during former superintendent Sylvia Atkinson’s short but controversial tenure.

Both finalists bring more than 20 years of experience as educators to the table and say they are ready to lead the Socorro ISD into the future.
