Dave Speelman: Latest Forecast…A Wet Several Months

by ABC-7 Chief Meteorologist “Doppler” Dave Speelman

It’s nice to see temperatures in June below normal while rainfall amounts have been above normal. We ended up the month of June with an abundance or rain – 1.37″ above normal! So far this July, our rainfall numbers are looking good as well.

Well, if you haven’t noticed already, the Monsoon is here and the latest weather outlook from the Climate Prediction Center has the El Paso and surrounding areas looking for an abundance of moisture. The graphic below shows what is anticipated when it comes to rain. Notice we are in the bulls eye where we are expecting above normal rainfall for July, August and September – our wettest months of the year. It’s interesting to note that there are only two other areas of the country that are expected to see above normal rain.

The latest temperature outlook graphic (below the rain graphic) shows that for the next several months heat may not be too much of a factor for us as well. We will be in that forecast zone which they call an “equal chance.” This means we have a 50-50 shot of being normal, above normal or below normal. All the heat is expected to stay off to the west and northwest. For our sake, let’s hope this prediction comes true.
