Las Cruces Police Arrest Man In Connection With Fatal Shooting
Police officers arrested a man in connection to a deadly November 2009 shooting.
Jamelle Allen Lowe, 20, of the 1700 block of Pomona Drive, was arrested Monday at a residence on Organ Avenue. Police investigators charged him with involuntary manslaughter and booked him into the county jail on a $10,000 bond.
According to police detectives, Lowe is responsible for the November 30, 2009 shooting death of 18-year-old Jessie Angel Torres. At about 10:45 a.m. that day, Torres was driving Lowe to an unknown location to buy marijuana, according to police.
Police said that Lowe was in the backseat of Torres’ Plymouth Neon while they were heading north on Telshor Boulevard. Detectives said that Lowe was trying to unload a sawed-off shotgun when it apparently fired off a shot that tore through the front seat and struck Torres.
At that point, according to police, Lowe and another passenger in the car, Chris Mancha, 15, drove the car to Memorial Medical Center. Emergency crews later airlifted Torres to University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, where he died later that day.
When police investigators searched the car, they found four unspent shells and the shotgun in the backseat. They also found two handguns inside the vehicle, police officials said.
