Las Cruces City Council To Consider Adopting Resolution Denouncing Ariz. Immigration Law

El Paso City Council has already voiced its opposition to Arizona’s new immigration law. Now, Las Cruces is poised to take similar action.

The two-page resolution is what Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima will introduce before city council on May 17.

Miyagishima said it’s his responsibility to encourage members to take a stand.

“I am not in support of allowing illegal immigrants to come into the United States,” the mayor said. “This resolution primarily was focused and solely focused at racial profiling.”

City council member Dolores Connor said, “I dont know if this is the direction anyone should be going I haven’t made that decision, it wasn’t my decision to bring the resolution forward.”

Connor said it is a federal issue and it should not be left to individual states to decide how to handle illegal immigration.
