Text Message Scam Targets Bank Customers

A new scam is zeroing in on bank customers with cell phones.

The scam uses text messages. The target: Chase Bank customers.

Robert Piseno, a Horizon City physical therapist, says Saturday, his wife and son received texts that appeared to come from “chase.com.”

The messages gave a telephone number, instructing them to call about recent account activity.

Piseno says when he called the number, an automated voice asked him to enter his 12-digit account number.

That seemed fishy to Piseno, so instead, he called the number on the back on his debit card and spoke with a bank representative.

The representative confirmed his suspicion: The whole thing is a scam.

“(The Bank) told me it was a good thing I called,” said Piseno. “They said they got inundated with calls for the same thing.”

Piseno says he has no idea how the scam artists acquired his family’s cell phone numbers since he only has his home phone number listed on his Chase account.

The phone number from the scam text message was disconnected Sunday.
