Man Sought In Stabbing On NMSU Campus

New Mexico State University Police are looking for 38-year-old Ismael Zambrano Chavira in connection with a stabbing that took place Thursday morning on campus.

At about 7 a.m., NMSU Police received a report of a stabbing that had just occurred in the parking lot of greenhouses located in the Arrowhead Research Park on the south end of the Las Cruces campus.

A 38-year-old female – Chavira’s ex-girlfriend – was found with multiple stab wounds and was treated before being transported by helicopter to University Medical Center in El Paso. As of Thursday evening, she was alert but still in critical condition.

Based on information from the victim, Chavira was already wanted on a $30,000 warrant for aggravated battery against a household member for an incident occurring in Doa Ana County . The warrant had been entered in the National Crime Information Center computer system since June 3, 2010.

Chavira is 5-foot-7, weight 170 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. He is believed to be driving a 1997 Dodge 4 door car, white in color, with New Mexico license plate GTM-352. Chavira was born in Chihuahua, Mexico and may be attempting to cross the border to avoid prosecution, according to NMSU Police.

Area law enforcement have been alerted to watch for Chavira, and additional warrants and charges are pending related to the stabbing. Due to the nature of this incident, the previous relationship and incidents between Chavira and the victim, and how Chavira fled, there are no indications of danger to others on campus at this point, according to NMSU Police.
